Dividend Investing with No Lies & Delusion

The Hard Reality Nobody Tells You

Let me tell you what dividend investing actually feels like in the first two years.

You have done the research. You understand the mechanics — at least, you understand them well enough. You have opened a brokerage account, you have identified some stocks, you have invested some money. You have opted into the DRIP. You are ready.

Then you wait.

The first dividend arrives. If you have invested $10,000 at a 4% average yield, you receive roughly $400 over the course of the year — about $33 per month, if the payments are spread evenly. For the effort involved in the research, the account setup, the decision-making, and the ongoing monitoring, $33 is not what most people imagined. It is not what the articles and YouTube channels made it feel like. It is $33. You can fill a tank of petrol with $33. You cannot retire on it.

That is the first hard thing. The early years of dividend investing do not feel like investing. They feel like waiting for something to happen that is happening so slowly you cannot see it moving.

Most people stop here. Not because the strategy has failed them — it has not, it has not even started yet — but because the emotional experience of the early phase does not match what they expected, and nobody warned them that it would feel this way.

This chapter is the warning.

The Timeline Problem

I want to be specific, because vague reassurances that ‘it takes time’ are exactly the kind of unhelpful framing that leaves people unprepared. Let me tell you, with numbers, what different starting positions actually look like.

Assume a portfolio with an average dividend yield of 4% and an average dividend growth rate of 6% per year. Assume you reinvest all dividends. Assume you add $500 per month in additional contributions. These are not optimistic assumptions — they are reasonable assumptions for a disciplined investor buying quality dividend-growth stocks.
